🌎 In this week’s episode of As the AI World Turns, we find one of Hollywood’s elite looking to avenge what she thought was an unauthorized use of “Her” voice by OpenAI.
By now, I’m sure everyone’s heard that Scarlett Johansson asked that one of the female voices used in ChatGPT, “Sky,” be taken down because it sounded a lot like her.
OpenAI complied though said the voice was that of a different actress that they would not name publicly out of respect for her privacy.
That appears to be true based on the statement OpenAI posted on its website.
But Sam Altman didn’t do himself and his company any favors when he tweeted “her,” the title of the Joaquin Phoenix movie in which Johansson played the part of the AI that the main character fell in love with, on the day OpenAI announced its 4o model.
The timing of his second outreach to Johansson to ask if she would be one of ChatGPT’s voices, just days before the 4o model announcement, served to raise suspicion as well.

While studies like Microsoft’s recent one show that 75% of people use AI chatbots at work, that level of adoption is way higher than what many of us on the ground in the industry see.
Trust in the companies serving up our new AI partners is paramount in encouraging the adoption of what can be an incredibly useful technology for everyone in work and everyday life.
This episode may have introduced more skepticism into the trustworthiness of OpenAI and the industry as a whole.
Let’s hope the incident puts AI companies on notice that great care needs to be taken in every single decision they make.
