🌎 In this week’s edition of ‘As the AI World’ turns, we see Elon Musk invoking a modern twist on an old adage, which is…
“If you can’t beat ‘em, sue ‘em.”
Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, naming Sam Altman and Greg Brockman specifically, alleging they broke the company’s founding agreement to build Artificial General Intelligence for the benefit of humanity as a nonprofit.

🧠 In an effort to knock down tech giant Microsoft as well, Musk also claims in the filing that GPT-4 counts as AGI.
And that Microsoft’s deal with OpenAI states it only owns rights to OpenAI’s non-AGI technology.

Remember last year when Musk made a Lord of the Rings reference, saying Altman holds “the ring of power?”
It was a tough call to assign characters to each of the tech players.
I’m not a rabid fan, so I got an assist from Brooke Kuhlmann and ChatGPT.
🧙 I went with Elon as Saruman.
❓👉 How would you have assigned them?

Anyways, let’s consider what this move could yield for Musk besides getting his $44 million investment back (unlikely):
1️⃣ Forcing OpenAI to return to its fully nonprofit status would remove the leading competition for Musk’s xAI and others.
2️⃣ Or, forcing the company to become fully for-profit could rattle employees who believe in the mission and perhaps spark a mass exodus of scarce talent.
3️⃣ Or, if the lawsuit goes to court, juicy details about the company could emerge - Musk is likely counting on them being unsavory enough to turn the market against OpenAI.
4️⃣ Or, the filing shines a light on this and spurs the California attorney general to take a look at the matter .
So maybe it’s not a bad play by Musk no matter the outcome (though it’s a bit unsightly)?

Either way, I think Microsoft will be fine.
Nadella has been a master strategist.
This week, he hedged their bets again with an investment in Mistral.
